Bangladesh Cricket BPL icons set to change teams

Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim is moving to a new franchise after his recent problems with Barisal Bulls owner.

Mushfiqur will feature for BPL team Rajshahi Kings in the next edition of the tournament, local media reports.

Sabbir Rahman, who was the Rajshahi’s icon in the last edition will be seeking out a new franchise as well.

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and opening batsman Tamim Iqbal are also set to change teams for the BPL upcoming season. Tamim will play for Cumilla Victorians while Mashrafe looks set for Rangpur Riders.

Mashrafe, Tamim and Mushfiq have already completed talks with their new franchise.

In the fifth edition of the BPL Shylet franchise are making a comeback. This means there will be one more icon player added to the roaster.

BPL governing council member secretary IH Mallick said that those who have made the mark with the national team will considered. He further added: “In light of his performances, Mustafizur Rahim will be the latest icon.”

Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad are staying with Dhaka Dynamites and Khulna Titans respectively.

Two icons of the last edition Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman have not finalized on any teams yet.

Imrul Kayes is being considered for the role of icon player by the BPL council. However, his team Kumilla Victorians have objected to the idea. Kumilla wants to retain Liton Das, Saifuddin and Imrul - as per the rule of holding onto four cricketers from past. If Imrul becomes an icon player that equation is likely to change.

The governing council have not decided the salaries of the icon players – the players will agree to the salaries on the basis of their individual contracts with their respective franchises.

Messi, Neymar praised by Barca boss

New Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde laughed off the idea of bringing in new players on Monday saying the best signings were the players already in the dressing room.

“I’m more than happy with the way things stand,” said Valverde when pressed on the potential signing of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.

“Happy with the players, happy with their work and their attitude,” he said as his players prepare for their trip to the United States on Wednesday.

“I really don’t care about any player anywhere else,” he said, knowing fans will be keen to win back the Spanish League title and indeed the Champions League, both won by their arch-rivals Real Madrid.

“Even if you might argue we need back up in certain areas,” he said, adding Barcelona had no offers on the table for any of their players either.

“For me, the best signings are the players I already have in my team.”

He said Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, Barcelona’s attacking trident were “a huge factor in the intimidation of our rivals.”

“Messi is a unique player and wherever I play him he will flourish. He will continue in the role he has always had, he’ll continue to do that very well,” he said.

Over the last two seasons Valverde’s predecessor Luis Enrique had sometimes strained relations with Messi, who he pulled deeper and then pushed out to the right.

“We need him both as a creator of chances and a finisher of chances, where he really makes the difference,” insisted the former Athletic Bilbao coach.

“As for Neymar—he’s doing very well in his current role, although we know he too could play in other roles,” said Valverde of the 25-year-old Brazil captain.

Barcelona play Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid in a lightening tour of the United States next week.

Roger Federer wins 8th Wimbledon title, beating Cilic in final

Roger Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and extended his record to 19 Grand Slam titles with victory over Croatia's Marin Cilic.

The Swiss third seed won 6-3 6-1 6-4 as seventh seed Cilic struggled with blisters on his left foot and broke down in tears during the second set.

Federer, 35, finished the contest in one hour and 41 minutes to claim his first Wimbledon title since 2012.

He becomes the oldest man in the Open Era to win the Wimbledon title.

"It is cruel sometimes," Federer said of Cilic's physical difficulties.

"But Marin fought well and is a hero, so congratulations on a wonderful tournament."
Federer surpasses Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, who won their seventh titles in 2000 and 1889 respectively, with only Marina Navratilova still ahead in terms of Wimbledon singles titles on nine.

He has won two of the three Grand Slam titles so far this year, having returned from a six-month break to win the Australian Open in January.

With 19 major titles he extends his lead over Rafael Nadal in the men's game to four, and now stands joint-fourth on the all-time list with Helen Wills Moody, five behind Margaret Court on 24.
'I never give up in a match'

Among his long list of achievements, Federer became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win the Wimbledon title without dropping a set.

The tournament favourite from the outset, he was rarely troubled over the course of seven matches, and Cilic was not in the condition to provide a serious test.

"I never give up in a match. I gave it my best - it's all I can do," he said afterwards.

Federer was playing in his 11th Wimbledon final and Cilic his first, and the gap in experience showed from the early stages.

Cilic hit a forehand which bounced before the net on the opening point as the nerves appeared hard to shake off.

Federer offered up a couple of early double faults but there was a sense of inevitability about the first break, which came in game five after Cilic fell heavily chasing down a drop shot, and then sent a backhand into the net.

A beautiful cross-court forehand helped Federer towards set point in game nine and Cilic duly double-faulted, ending the set with a 49% first-serve percentage that hardly troubled the Swiss.

After Federer made it 3-0 in the second set, a tearful Cilic sat in his chair as the doctor, tournament referee and supervisor attended to him.

'It's a wonderful moment for the family'

Whether it was physical or emotional pain at this stage, the Croat was clearly in some distress and there was little he could do to stop Federer racing into a two-set lead after just 61 minutes.

A medical time-out was taken before the start of the third set and this time strapping and padding applied to Cilic's left foot.

A first retirement in a men's singles final since 1911 appeared likely but Cilic struggled on, while Federer probed for the break that would surely end his wait for a Wimbledon title.

It came at 3-3, when Cilic netted a backhand and successive forehands, and only the dark clouds above Centre Court appeared capable of delaying Federer's coronation.

There were signs of nerves from Federer when he served for the title for the first time since 2012.

A first championship point disappeared with a wayward forehand, but an ace down the middle followed and it was the celebrating Swiss who was now tearful as he looked to his team and family, including wife Mirka and four children, in the stands.

"I think the younger twins think this is a nice view and a nice playground - hopefully one day they'll understand," added Federer.

"They come for the finals. It's a wonderful moment for the family and my team.

"This one is for us. Thank you to Wimbledon, thank you Switzerland."

Any woman can't go this place

Visitors will not be allowed to set foot on a men-only UNESCO World Heritage island in Japan from next year, an official said yesterday.

The tiny landmass of Okinoshima, where women are banned and male visitors must bathe naked in the sea before visiting its shrine, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site last week.

Limited numbers are currently permitted to land on the island in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) -- this year it was 200 -- for a yearly festival that lasts just two hours, but they must adhere to strict rules.

But Munakata Taisha, the shrine which owns Okinoshima, has decided to ban travel for anyone apart from priests from next year to protect the island from being damaged, a spokesman told AFP.

"A strict preservation is required now that the island has got the UNESCO listing," he said.

"It will be risky if 200 visitors continue to come to the island," he said, adding that Okinoshima is "the island protected by Shinto priests".

The island is permanently manned by a Shinto priest who prays to the island's goddess, in a tradition that has been kept up for centuries.

However, academics will be allowed to land on the island for research and preservation purposes, he added.
The island, which sits off the northwest coast of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, was an important window for foreign trade in Japan since ancient times, forming part of a route that linked the archipelago to the Korean peninsula and China.
